Welcome to Senior Care Advisors’s Blog!

October 31, 2016

Hello! Welcome to the blog for Senior Care Advisors, a care management company. My name is David Rosenberg. I am a geriatric care manager with 20 years of experience in the aging and nonprofit fields (For more information about me, click here). In the pages of this blog, I will discuss trends and challenges impacting older adults and family caregivers, and also provide useful tips and resources. I hope you find it helpful.

For my first blog entry, I want to draw your attention to the impact of loneliness on older adults. The New York Times recently posted an article about a research study that links seniors’ loneliness with physical ailments, decreases in cognitive ability, and early death. According to the study, approximately one-third of seniors age 65 and over in the United States and Britain live alone; and in the U.S., half of people 85 and older live alone.

Fortunately, there are many solutions to reduce loneliness for older adults. If you are a family caregiver, encourage your loved one to attend programs at a senior center or her or his house of worship. Many of them offer excellent programs that provide socialization, a nutritious meal and health screenings. An easy way to help reduce loneliness in a senior is to just call - even a quick “Hi! How are you?” can make a difference. Some community organizations offer telephone reassurance and virtual lecture programs, where a speaker does a presentation for isolated or frail seniors via the phone. If a senior is experiencing cognitive decline, adult day care offers appropriate care in a safe and welcoming environment, while also providing a valuable respite for the caregiver.

Finally, Senior Care Advisors helps address the issue through a check-in program, where we will reach out to an older adult through the phone and/or home visits, depending on the senior’s need and interest.
